Breast Self-Exam and Clinical Breast Exam Overview

Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women in this country.  When breast cancer is found early, treatment is very successful.  This is why breast examinations, both breast self-exams and clinical breast exams, are so important.  Breast examinations are ways to check a woman’s breasts for changes and lumps. The American Cancer Society recommends doing a breast self-exam by laying down on your back and using your three middle fingers to feel for lumps, bumps or thickening. An annual clinical breast exam from a health provider — often as a routine part of a gynecological exam—is also very important for women to have. Women over 40 should also get mammograms to check for breast changes and lumps.
