Fetal Growth and Development

When a woman is pregnant, the growth of the baby is a process that often provides a sense of awe. Although nine months is the common timeframe to describe pregnancy, it is actually 280 days, measured from the first day of the last menstrual period, or 40 weeks—and then divided into three separate trimesters. The gestational period ends during week 10 whereas the fetal period begins.  During these days, weeks and months, fetal development and growth are determined by consistent exams performed by a gynecologist and include a myriad of tests to check for weight and length, in addition to organ and brain development as well as certain diseases.
