Menopause
Menopause is the term used to describe when a menstrual period permanently ends. It is a normal part of every woman’s life and happens because as a woman ages, her ovaries make less of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone—the two hormones that regulate a woman’s menstrual cycle. Menopause is usually confirmed once a woman goes twelve consecutive months without a period, or when both ovaries are surgically removed (which is known as surgical menopause). A woman will experience menopause around the same time as her mother—but typically menopause occurs around age 50.
