Ultrasound Overview
An ultrasound, also known as a sonogram, can be performed on a pregnant woman at any time during her pregnancy to establish the age and size of the fetus, as well as its well-being and place in the placenta. Ultrasounds are also used to check for any abnormalities and assist in other procedures such as an amniocentesis. During a sonogram, gel is applied to the mother’s abdomen and an instrument known as a transducer is swept across the area. High frequency sound waves provide an image similar to an x-ray and the image is displayed on a screen where the baby’s entire body, organs and surrounding tissues can be seen.
