Yeast Infection Overview

A yeast infection, also known as candidal vulvovaginitis, is caused by an imbalance of yeast that multiplies and resides inside the vagina.  Most women will experience a yeast infection probably at one point or another in their lives and will experience the annoying symptoms that follow, including itching, burning, redness and most likely, a thick, cottage-cheese like discharge.  Yeast infections can be caused by certain medications, a change in blood sugar, and by douching regularly. Women who stay in a wet bathing suit for too long or who wear tight jeans or synthetic underwear are also at risk.  Yeast infections can usually be cured with over-the-counter medications and other times by prescriptive drugs.
