Oophorectomy Overview

The ovaries are a viable part of a woman’s reproductive system and exist to release eggs for fertilization and produce female sex hormones. An oophorectomy is the surgical removal of one or both of the ovaries.  A woman may choose to have an oophorectomy in order to reduce the amount of estrogen and progesterone circulating through the body, thus reducing the chance of breast and ovarian cancer, as well as endometriosis.  If a woman is contemplating having an ovary removal surgery, it is best to discuss the options and after-effects with her gynecologist.
