Pelvic Ultrasound & Transvaginal Ultrasound
An ultrasound is a common gynecological procedure performed on a woman to allow a visual look at the female pelvic organs and structures within the reproductive system. The type of ultrasound procedure performed, whether it is a pelvic or transvaginal, depends on the reason for the ultrasound and both might be needed for a clear diagnosis and treatment recommendation. A pelvic ultrasound is a noninvasive procedure using an instrument known as a transducer that is swept across the pelvic area. A transvaginal ultrasound is when a long, thin transducer is inserted into the vagina. Both procedures result in high frequency sound waves that provide an image similar to an x-ray and the image is displayed on a screen so that all of the internal organs can be viewed.
